Supplements that can cause acne.

All vitamins are good for you, right? In general, this is true, but if you have acne prone skin, this suddenly becomes a false claim.

If your acne has aggravated or seems to be getting worse, you may want to look in your medicine cabinet for the supplements listed below that can cause acne. Keep in mind that adding a vitamin or herbal supplement to your routine can trigger an unexpected break. Here are some of the common culprits that could be putting you at risk for asthma attacks:

  • Vitamin B12: A study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles concludes that vitamin B12 is linked to several cases of acne in people taking a vitamin B12 supplement. B12, naturally found in animal and dairy products, is essential for the body. Vegetarians and vegans or those who do not get enough B12 in their diet can have serious health problems. However, it has been shown that an excess of B12 causes an alteration in the bacteria of the skin known as Propionibacterium acnes.

Although more research is required, if you have recently added a B12 supplement, or a multivitamin containing B12, it could be to blame for its breakdown.

 

  • Multivitamins: Most multivitamins contain iodine and biotin (B7), which when consumed on a regular basis is known to cause acne. If you are consuming more than 150 mcg of Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for iodine, then you are consuming too much. Note that it is a daily total that includes food. If you eat dairy products, seafood, seaweed, soy products or “salty” foods, an iodine overdose is already possible.
    If you are not yet consuming too much iodine in your diet (which most people do), then your multivitamins may be the cause of your acne.

    Multivitamins also contain high amounts of B12 that we talk about and can also trigger your acne.

  • Biotin (Vitamin B7): Biotin is found in skin and hair nail supplements, B complex, multivitamins and nutritious powdered drinks found at your local health food store. Biotin is a common supplement that causes acne because it is in many places; Including your shampoo and conditioner!

Biotin is one of the worst offenders when it comes to acne because you would think this supplement is good for acne, but it is not. Also known as B7 and Vitamin H, biotin is already produced naturally by the body. Taking these supplements is not only unnecessary, but too much biotin can cause acne. Since biotin is found in vitamins for hair, skin and nails, it continues to fly off the shelves.

Here are some tips to stay free of biotin:

  1. Mix the multivitamin: 99% of the multivitamins on the market contain biotin and, therefore, trigger acne. Although they contain other essential antioxidants and minerals, biotin unfortunately ruins everything.   2. Check your nutritional drink twice: a large number of “healthy” nutritional drinks (even when sold by a health food store or a friend representing a health and wellness company) may contain biotin or B7 as an added nutrient .   3. Check the ingredients in your shampoo and conditioner, make sure these beauty products do not contain lauryl sodium and laureth sulfate (known as pore blockers) as well as biotin, vitamin B7 and vitamin H.
  4. Minimize foods containing biotin-rich biotin foods include egg yolks, organ meats, avocados and cauliflower. These foods in moderation are the best.

 

Remember that while the supplements mentioned above can be an acne trigger, this is NOT the main cause of your acne. As we discussed in the What is Acne? Page, acne is first and foremost a genetic condition of the skin that reverses too many dead skin cells (a process called retention hyperkeratosis). For some, taking out the acne triggering supplement can do the trick. However, in most cases, acne will also have to be treated with a topical regimen for home care as well.
