This blog post looks at the best ways to get rid of teen acne naturally. I am researching the causes of teen acne and natural acne treatments available for preteens, teens and more.
There was not a single day of my teenage years when I was not fighting a breakup. Still today, I have struggled with acne for more years of my life than with fair skin. My moderate / severe acne spanned more than 15 years from 9 years to 26 years, when I finally took things into my hands and healed the causes of my acne.
Teenage acne is a common skin condition that is suspected to affect more than 85% of teenagers. Just because it is common, it is no less painful and frustrating to deal with. Teen acne can appear as pimples, clogged pores, pustules, red pimples and, in severe cases, deep and painful cysts. Fortunately, all types of teen acne can and should be treated naturally, there are many effective treatments for teenage acne that do not require aggressive chemicals or medications.
I spent my entire adolescence struggling with acne and tried all the conventional treatments of Clinique and ProActiv’s 3-step systems, oral antibiotics and the pill. However, nothing worked! As the years went by and my skin got worse, I became a star student, working tirelessly to be the best I could. If I could not have beautiful skin like all my friends, then at least I wanted to be known for being good at something. But it was never enough, my self-esteem still lost strength, I always looked in the mirror. All I wanted was clear skin, however, it took me 15 years to realize that I had been looking in all the wrong places and, in fact, I could easily have cleaned my teenage acne, if only I had taken a little more care of it myself and stopped looking for a miracle pill or a skin care product.
Hyperactive hormones are often the culprits of teenage acne, but it is not always just puberty that triggers the onset of teenage outbreaks. For most teens, as they approach puberty, the hormones called androgens become saturated and cause the skin to produce an excess of oil that clogs the pores and allows the bacteria to grow and create a large juicy spot. However, if your acne starts years before you reach puberty, then it is not just teen hormones that are to blame for your acne.
My acne started at age 9, 3 years before I started wearing a bra and 4 years before my period began! My acne was not just caused by puberty (although I barely got to puberty, my acne started to get worse). Teenage acne was caused by picky eating habits and a bad diet consisting of too much junk food. Growing up I never ate my vegetables, I was very picky and I basically lived on chicken nuggets and chips: it was super sporty and I never put on any weight, so my diet never seemed to worry me, however, my skin was telling a different story! My mother fought for me to eat a healthy balanced diet and Sunday roasts would always consist of ‘brown chicken’ (beef / lamb) or ‘white chicken’ (REAL chicken / chicken) because I refused to eat anything else chicken! Besides being fussy and not eating my vegetables and natural foods, I also ate too much junk food. Every day after school, I took chocolate bars and cola glasses before eating my dinner with chicken nuggets, without any nutritional benefit. The result? My skin was dull but greasy and my forehead was covered with small grains that slowly migrated to my cheeks as I approached puberty.
At the time, I had no idea how sugar and junk food were affecting my skin. But now, after years of research, I understand how sugar has the power to create hormonal imbalance too! Similar to when we reach puberty, sugar causes our body to produce too many androgens, these androgenic hormones cause our oil glands to produce MORE oil, clogged pores and rashes! This is the same for ALL: preadolescents, teenagers, adults, boys, girls, men and women … too much sugar in our diet = acne!
In most cases, adolescent hormones will settle within a couple of years without any intervention, but for those whose acne appears before puberty, it is important to focus on eating a healthy and balanced diet, as these are cases of acne that can often continue into adulthood. unless they are treated early. Whether teenage acne is caused by the onset of puberty or a large amount of junk food, if you want to quickly track your way to cleanse the skin and do not want to wait for teen acne to clean itself, there are some things which you can do to speed up the process.
Reducing sugar and junk food and eating more healthy vegetables and fats is the easiest thing to get rid of teenage acne naturally. Sugar and processed foods that contain additives, artificial colorings and industrial fats cause inflammation and cause our pores to produce excess oil. As I mentioned in this publication, too much sebum increases the risk of clogged pores and outbreaks. In addition to reducing bad things, teen acne can be greatly improved by adding more good things! Some of my favorite foods that help eliminate teen acne and blemishes include:
- Kale, broccoli and spinach – packed with antioxidants and fiber to reduce inflammation and promote a healthy digestive system
- Butter and Eggs: Rich sources of healthy fats and essential liposoluble vitamins that help eliminate acne.
- Mackerel and salmon: full of omega-3 fatty acids that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin.
- Berries and citrus: rich in vitamin C that can match skin tone and reduce scars.
- Macadamia nuts and chia seeds: high in omega 3 anti-inflammatory and low in omega 6 inflammatory (unlike other nuts and seeds with high omega 6 content)
- Water: Drinking lots of water is essential to remove toxic waste that could otherwise seep through the skin and cause stains
With all that I have learned about acne in recent years, it is now so obvious to me what caused my teenage acne: my bad diet! If I could tell my 13 year old son one thing, it would be that all the garbage I was eating was the main factor that prevented me from having a fair and beautiful skin like my friends. To be fair, at age 13, he probably would not have listened and continued trying to find that miracle acne product which meant he could still eat junk all day, every day. * NEWSFLASH * There is no miracle product! Skin care products are just band aid solutions! After 15 years of testing every topical treatment for acne, finally (reluctantly) gave all thang healthy to eat a test combined with soft and natural products for skin care, and you know what? It was the best thing I did, not only for my skin, but also for my energy levels, hair, nails and general health in general!
Oh. My. God. The things I did with my skin when I was a teenager? From using toothpaste like a mask to abrasive peels, I made my skin ten times worse simply because it was hard! I have the overwhelming urge to throw all the products to the face and perform each zapping trick in an attempt to get rid of teen acne, but 9 out of 10 times, these strategies only make the skin worse. Not only will our spots remain there, but we will also have red and raw skin that seems to be getting worse every day … so what do we do? Add more hard products and expect the best?
Not simply not.
The secret of a clear and healthy skin is working WITH YOUR skin, not against it! I spent my entire adolescence looking for a skin care system that worked, from Dermalogica to ProActiv and FreeDerm to Clinique, but instead of leaving me with a clear and beautiful skin like in the ads, I stayed red with spots, dry and scaly . oily skin with blemishes! The ingredients used in leading skin care products are so hard on the skin: some Clinique products have even been known to remove paint (yes!)
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), alcohol, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances and dyes are just some of the unpleasant ingredients found in skin care that could worsen teenage acne. Sodium lauryl sulfate and alcohol are one of the worst as they damage the protective barrier of the skin and cause dryness and irritation. Our skin fights this dryness with MORE oil and as we discussed in this publication, more oil often means more acne. Other ingredients to take into account are mineral oils and petrochemicals that can block pores, preventing the skin from breathing and catching dirt and bacteria, which can lead to breakouts.
Working with your skin and using soft, natural ingredients that balance oil production instead of causing more oil production is the number one strategy for skin care for teenagers with acne. These natural products will not only help to balance the oily skin but are also less likely to aggravate sensitive skin and actually contain ingredients that help heal the skin faster.
So … Where do you find effective and natural products for teenage acne? Fortunately, Green People cosmetics geniuses developed the first and only organic range certified exclusively for teens called OY! (Young organic). This range contains some of the BEST natural ingredients for acne prone skin as there is not a single harsh ingredient or clogged pores in sight!
Now I know what you’re thinking. Because it’s natural, it means it will not work as well as the chemical treatments for acne, right? Well, you’re wrong! Green tea extract is my main skin care ingredient for acne. It has been shown in clinical studies that it reduces sebum production by 60% and both Black Willow Bark and Tea Tree have been shown to be effective in combating acne-causing bacteria without damaging the skin and Black Willow. The bark also exfoliates the skin and prevents pores from clogging. Not only that, but also this organic range contains Zinc Oxide that cures blemishes, Rosehip oil to fade and red marks left by acne, Aloe Vera to soothe the skin and Prebiotics that help the growth of GOOD bacteria while restrict harmful bacteria.
The OY! The range consists of 3 essential elements of simple skin care (face wash, moisturizing cream and treatment serum) and an extra dye concealer for girls.
Step 1: Clean your skin with OY! Foaming Face Wash
Step 2: Moisturizer your skin OY! Moisturizing cleanser
Step 3: At night, treat areas prone to areas with a small drop of OY! Purifying Treatment Serum
* Optional * OY! Blemish Concealer is ideal for use alone or under mineral base. Personally, I do not think it works brilliantly as a proofreader, because there is currently only one color option, so it is harder to get a perfect skin combination. However, I have come to love it as a totally colored moisturizing / priming cream for mineral makeup underneath, as it offers really excellent coverage. It is also wonderful to know that the first layer of makeup is completely safe for acne and is actually HELP to cure imperfections rather than aggravate them. The way it applies also makes a big difference in how it looks on the skin and I find it works best applied with clean fingers, tapping on the skin or a beauty sponge instead of a base brush.

While it is aimed at teenage acne, I really believe these products are the best for acne. It is very difficult to find moisturizers and cleansers that are truly safe for rashes and specifically to reduce acne and heal the skin without clogging the pores. I can not even count the number of times I’ve researched a skin care product that looks promising only to find it contains coconut oil or palm oil (super pore!) Or alcohol or SLS (causing more oil production) .
The only caveat I would say about using this range for adult acne is that you probably need an extra facial oil on top for additional nutrition and anti-aging properties. My favorite facials for acne are squalane oil Indie Lee (USA), jojoba oil MV (USA) and rose hip oil Pai (USA).
I do not think teens need to take tons of supplements to get rid of acne naturally. 9 times out of 10, eating a balanced and healthy diet and using gentle and natural skin care is enough to send the packaging for teenage acne! However, there is a supplement that I think is the gold star of acne supplements and that is cod liver oil.
Cod liver oil contains omega 3 and vitamin A: two important nutrients to eliminate acne that I recommend to everyone. These nutrients not only have amazing benefits on the skin, but also soothe, soften and repair the inflamed lining of the intestine, which also promotes a clearer and healthier skin in the long run as well. In addition to being super-calming and anti-inflammatory, the bioavailable vitamin A found in Cod Liver Oil helps prevent dead cells from clogging pores, reduces oil production, suppresses androgen production and protects fats from oxidation (oxidized fats can cause severe inflammation).
The cod liver oil I take is a brand called Rosita, it is quite expensive, but it is the best and offers a really high and pure dose of vitamin A (which is certainly the best vitamin for acne). Cheaper cod liver oils are processed that eliminate all vitamins and then are replenished, usually at not very high doses (Rosita has 4,000-5,000iu of vitamin A and cheaper brands like Calson and Mollers have 250-850iu of vitamin A … As vitamin A is what you need to eliminate acne, I think it’s worth the extra cost!)
If you are considering taking other supplements to help get rid of teen acne, I strongly recommend that you seek support from a naturopath as they will be able to determine the correct dose for your age group and your personal needs.
